Thanksgiving 2010 (and Friday dog blogging)

This year, I journeyed to Princeton, NJ to spend Thanksgiving with a friend who was dogsitting. At 9:50 on Thursday morning I read a Facebook message from Frances Slade, conductor of Princeton Pro Musica, asking me to come to the 10 am rehearsal and sing the community Thanksgiving service at the Princeton University Chapel. Since we were in Princeton rather than Cranbury, I was only a few minutes late and got there toward the end of warmups.

This is the window with the party horns at the rear of the U Chapel.
There was a very short procession of religious, university and government people.
Eric Plutz was the organist. Those folks were the sopranos and, I think basses. Frances is barely visible in the lower left of the photo.

There was a solo handbell ringer at the service - Hyosang Park. She was excellent. I know you can't see her very well. Neither could I. She was accompanied by Akiko Hosaki on the piano.

This is Erasmus, our charge. He is a gorgeous, HUGE, ivory colored golden retriever.
We had a scary incident this morning just before I left. Erasmus has arthritis in his hips - he's 11, I think. The deck was wet and slippery and he lost his footing when he bounded out of the house ending up lying flat on his tummy with his back legs splayed out behind him. He wouldn't move. I massaged his legs and hips and rolled him over, back and forth then pulled his back end off the deck so he could stand more steadily and easily which he eventually did then went back into the house. We let him rest a bit then I took him out on the leash via the carpeted steps. He did his business and didn't want to come back in but I needed to get on the road. Nothing worse than a pet problem when the owners are away! And there was no way the two of us could have carried that dog. He is too large and too heavy. I called on the way home and she had walked him with success. Whew!
There was a little slush on my windshield after the Thanksgiving service. When I left this morning Princeton was warm and wet. On the way home, however, the rain and mist stopped and the last half of the journey was in chilly sunshine. This is one view I always look forward to on I-80 - what appears after a long downhill run between cliffs.
Other than the episode this morning, the brief vacation was good. Good food. Good company. Good traveling. Good dog. Good Thanksgiving.
And lots to be thankful for.

I'm blessed with such interesting friends

Updated 9.23.10
Updated again 9.26.10
If you are on Facebook and friends with Ozzie Clumber, you can see the identities of all or most of these people. The original story of the red hats is here. I've met more than a dozen of these folks in person. We are from all over. Our leader with the purple hat is MadPriest who lives in England. The gal with the drumsticks is Lindy who lives in Wuxi, China. Some of us are on the other side now. They have golden hats. As I said, I'm blessed with so many wonderful, caring and definitely interesting friends. And these are just some of my blog friends.

Choices - corrected - and made

Thursday 19 November 2009

Weston, WV - George Bland, Janis's father - service 2:00 pm, visiting Wednesday 6:00 to 8:00 pm - funeral home had it wrong
Utica, NY - Jim Jensen, Kathy's husband - visiting 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, service 7:00 pm.

I've done some pretty impressive traveling lately but this is impossible.

Grump.

I think I like the idea of visiting hours after the funeral however.

Over the years we have known each other on the internet from the Anglican/Episcopal board on beliefnet.com thru the blogs and Facebook, Janis and I have become friends, sharing our lives usually via Instant Messaging and several times in person. I would feel like I was avoiding family if I didn't attend her dad's funeral. So I will be going to Weston, WV Thursday. And praying for the Jensen family all the way.

RIP George Linn Bland, Jr: July 3, 1917 - November 15, 2009

My WV beliefnet/blogger/Facebook friend Janis's father died this evening after a long vigil. He was an artist. You can learn more about him here. I met him once. He was a fellow scotch drinker with a great sense of humor. May Janis, her mother and the rest of the family find peace.

Please Godde, don't allow the funeral on Thursday!

RIP the Very Rev. James M. Jensen 1946 - 2009

From Kathy Jensen on Facebook:
My husband, the Very Rev. James M. Jensen, rector of Grace Church Utica, NY died unexpectedly late this afternoon. We were at an ordination and he had chest pains and we went to the hospital and he did not make it. His aorta ruptured and it was all over. Nothing more I can say now. We are in shock.

I stayed with the Jensen family on the way to Montreal in June. Prayers for the family and those of us who love them.

UPDATED: The funeral will be at 7 pm with visiting from 3 till 6 at Grace Church in Utica. I hope to go.

UPDATED FURTHER: The newspaper article is here.

Please, Godde, don't schedule Janis's father's funeral at the same time!

RIP Tipper

Tipper passed away tonight. Please say a prayer for Elaine who has lost the buddy who has accompanied her thru many of the storms in her life. He must have felt that she can now go on without him and left her in the care of his friend Coritzaki.

Hikers

One week ago I joined these folks on a short hike. It was her birthday. I'm so happy I got to see them. Two of my very favorite people. I was with them for his birthday in February too. This one was a bit quieter.

We have some activities planned for tomorrow then this blogger will begin the trek homeward on Sunday. I have to be at a rehearsal in Pittsburgh by 7 pm on Tuesday. And of course I'm not going straight home. Too many friends.

Southern bloggers plus me

We ate at Feast in Decatur, GA.

I tend to not identify the people in my photos unless they are easily identifiable elsewhere. These include this, this and this among others.

Question of the day. Why are the bloggers I love so funny?

Prayers requested

Please include in your prayers Michael who will have serious surgery tomorrow. He has survived a series of major health problems yet his family is very concerned. My friend Eak is both worried and distracted by her brother's possible outcomes. Please add a special petition for her as she is very special to me.

Religion run amuck (updated)

Prayers are requested for our friend Lee. He has a few problems like cancer which requires very expensive chemo forever, no income until he gets disability which will hopefully be soon, no energy to do regular work, separation from his wife and kids and, worst of all, parents from hell. Oh, he does have some wonderful friends who help financially and give him a place to stay. And he is active in the Episcopal church.

Then there are his parents. They are constant reminders of how evil religion can be, especially certain types of "Christianity". They are fundies who know everything there is to know about God. Everyone else is evil. They have hated his wife since they first met many years ago. They tell the family, including the kids, they are going to hell because they belong to the Episcopal church cult. They will help Lee financially until they suddenly have a change of heart and go back to their religious rants. They are simply unstable. Not to mention evil.

They just threatened to sue Lee and his wife for money they "borrowed" and for custody of the children. Ordinarily the documentation they possess - emails, blogs, etc. - would prove his folks are not fit parents for children of any age and should be served with a restraining order. No self respecting attorney would touch the case. But he is a retired lawyer. Lawyers stick together and know judges who will side with them even in outrageous cases. Fortunately Lee managed to talk his mother out of that for the time being at least.

Please add Lee, his wife and kids to your prayer lists.

Update: John writes better than I do - here.
