I simply cannot understand why people use tobacco today. It can kill. It is filthy. It can cause a person to lose control of their own life via addiction. It is now ridiculously expensive. Why?

I think they continue because of the addiction.
I think they start because they don't think it's really that bad, don't think it will affect them so badly.
I think for some people there's an aspect of self-destruction involved as well.
From what I understand, nicotine makes for an extremely powerful addiction. The voice of reason doesn't sound very loud to someone who's always telling her/himself, "I'll quit tomorrow."
